Recently we have been involved with the Cardiff Comets ladies ice hockey team who play in division one of the national women's league.

I have had a great time photographing this fast paced and highly technical sport and look forward to covering more of the comets games next season.

Help Portrait Day is this Saturday. The event is world wide but me and some other local photographers will be doing our little bit down at the top club in Machen. Afternoon everyone. Sorry it's been a while since I've posted here. We are very busy with portrait sittings at the moment, with people ordering gifts for Christmas.
In fact I've just put the two latest sessions on line over at www.jnorthphoto.co.uk
There is still time to book in before Christmas but spaces are filling up and with the deadlines we have from the printers and framers we can't really photograph much into December and guarantee Christmas delivery.

WBC Night Of Champions

As promised heres a small selection of images from the WBC night of champions event held in Cardiff.

I shot alot of images of boxing champions past and present over the three days. Had a really good time. The photographs above (from top to bottom) are of Alan Minter, Wales' very own Joe Calzaghe and Enzo Maccinerelli and last (but by no means least) the legendary Roberto Duran.

This, as I say, is a very small selection of what was shot. I will try and get everything online soon.

The Latest News From J North Photography

Morning all.
Just a quick update on the lastest goings on here.
First of all I should mention that the website has moved, you can now find us at www.jnorthphoto.co.uk
The .com may be resurected at some point but for now just use the .co.uk.
We still have free portrait shoots available so if you are interested please get in touch.
The really big news around these parts is that we have just had the pictures back from the African photo project. I'm really pleased with the results, it's just going to take some time to work my way through all the images. I will share some of the photographs with you here before long.
The hope always was to try and publish a book that could be sold to generate money for the Maasai Heritage Preservation fund (http://www.cycleforafrica.co.uk/index.php) and I think we have enough photographs to do that.
Anyway, that's all for now.

The Doctor Visits Caerphilly

O.K, I'm a little late in posting this. As many of you may know for a few weeks before Christmas the Tardis was parked atop one of the towers of Caerphilly castle.

Got this shot early in the morning a day or two after it first appeared thinking it wouldn't be there very long. In the end I would have had plenty of time to get a shot.

Coming up this December team jnorthphoto along with other local photographers are getting involved in Help-Portrait day.

The brainchild of celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart, Help-Portrait is a movement of photographers, coming together in every major city, to use their photography skills to give back to the community. On December 12th, photographers around the world will be grabbing their cameras, finding people in need, and taking their picture.When the prints are ready, the photographs get delivered. Money isn't involved here, it's a charitable event.

A Mega Success

Megaday weekend was once again a huge success with thousands of pounds being raised for charity.

Music fans filled the tent at Caerphilly rugby club on both Saturday and Sunday. Once again the bands who played and the volunteers who helped run the event did a wonderful job.

In this new section of the jnorthphoto blog I hope to introduce you to the other members of the J North Photography team.

There is only one person I could start such a series of posts with and that is the lovely Rhian Foster. Rhian (or Dr Foss as she is also known) has been with J North Photography since day one and has turned her hand to various jobs. She has been our researcher,sales woman,model and driver. Quite simply I think we would be completely sunk without her.

As summer approaches most people start to look forward to taking things a little easier. Unfortunately for me and the rest of the jnorthphoto team the summer actually means alot more work. Not that we are complaining, in fact we wouldn't have things any other way. This summer in particular looks like it may be particularly productive. We've got lot's of events we are covering coming up shortly, some we have done before and some new ones as well. We were up in Stratford on Avon on an assignment recently, it's not often you get a chance to go sight seeing but we did manage to find a bit of time to visit Warwick Castle. We only had an hour or so there but I'm sure you could have a grand family day out there in the summer.

As for Stratford itself it's a very nice place. A real hub of literature and language, the jnorthphoto team felt right at home.

It's been a long time coming but J North Photography will soon be making the leap onto the big screen. O.K, it's not actually going to be the "big screen" but the first ever jnorthphoto.com video advert is due to go into production very shortly.
At this stage I can't confirm or deny any of the casting decisions that have been made, other than to quash rumours that the add will feature Ian Holm and Ian Mckellen as Bilbo Bagins and Gandalf the grey.

Here at jnorthphoto.com we've never been big on self congratulation, we tend to stick to a "you're only as good as your last photo" or as Han Solo once put it "Don't get cocky kid." approach.

However, having said that this weeks archive photo does allow us a brief moment of celebration. The above photograph entitled "Metropolis" was taken earlier in the year on a trip to Madrid. It's always been one of my favourites (in fact you may have noticed it in the gallery section of the main site.)

Last week we at J North photography were truly honoured when Metropolis won the first ever Keith Ferrier memorial award for best architectural print. To win an award named after such a well respected photographer stands as a true high point for J North photography.

Gdansking In The Dark

This weeks archive photograph is entitled "Shore leave"

The photograph was taken right back at the start of the year on Sopot pier in Poland. Along with Gdynia and Gdansk, Sopot makes up what is known as the tri city area on Poland's coastline with the Baltic.

Something of a rouges gallery this one. From left to right your looking at my brother Steve, Lewis (the original jnorthphoto I.T whizz and web master) and my other brother Howell (for whom this is a second appearance on these pages).

All three have helped us out at J North photography over the last year or so, whether it be with lifts in my pre driving day's, sage advice on all manor of subjects or just a good old fashioned shoulder to openly weep upon when the biting cold of Northern Poland in February becomes to much.

A Room With A Sea View

Congratulations to Sea View RFC who recorded there first ever win last weekend beating Sully Sports 22-10.

We have been proud sponsors of Sea View since there formation at the start of this season and it is great news that the lads have recorded there first win. Hopefully the club will now move on to bigger and better things.

The top picture above shows the "view" in action. The other one is of me receiving a pennant from the club at there recent presentation evening.

Archive photo of the week

This weeks archive photo is actually quite a recent one, despite it's old fashioned appearance. The picture was taken for a range of Welsh themed greetings cards that our sister firm cymrucards.net were producing. Most of the cards in the cymrucards range are landscape photographs from my back catalogue but to compliment these we needed a few more designs with a "Welsh" twist. As a result we explored the usual avenues of dragons, daffodils, leeks and Tom Jones (we were certain a card based on Tom could work but feared a swift reprisal from "his people".)

Some of these designs actually made it to the production stage and are selling well,especially the dragon if you must you know.

Anyway, back to the picture above. It was created with the print dead line looming when we decided that "there's nothing more Welsh than Welsh miner". Due to the lateness of the hour there was no time to call in someone to model for the photograph so I had to step up myself and put on the costume and make up. Some how the resulting photo then side stepped it's way past the better judgement of myself and the good people at Cymru cards and made it to print and into the Cymru cards collection.

As for the popularity of the "Jon North dressed as a miner" card it is very difficult to say. I'm advised that working out just how popular a greetings card is can be a complex equation that takes in many different factors. I'm also advised that despite the relative success of the majority of the cards in the range that up to this point there have been precisely zero copies of the"Jon North dressed as a miner" card sold.

Heres somthing a little new for jnorthphoto.com.
The very first archive photo of the week. Every week I will dig out and upload one of my favourite photographs from the J North photography vaults.

First up is an old favourite of mine called "Film Noir". As I remember it this one was a runner up in the 2006 G.S Trophy.

The idea behind this photograph was to try and create somthing that felt cinematic and hopefully somthing that told a bit of a story too.
I've always liked it, as for the shady character holding the case that's my brother Howell.
